# PracticeLikeAnthony, 60 minutes

Day 5 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
What a lovely day! Sunny and mild outside, no wind. Slightly damp on the ground but not a problem. Feeling well rested and looking forward to going along to the Camden juggling club this evening, in a good mood for a juggle!
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went well today, got around 70 catches, which is my best for a while. Starting to think working on it just a little bit every day is helping
Mills warm up was good, and then 5 ball mills went ok. Maybe got over 20 catches once, reasonable.

Pirouettes went very well today, tried to really focus on technique with the 3 ball stuff. Making sure I finished throwing before spinning and bringing my arms into my body when I span. 3 ups out of 5 felt really good, linked two together a couple of times.
Landed a 5 up on my very first attempt! Ended up with 3 and a half in my allocated time (the half I landed but didn’t get back into a stable cascade, might have got a qualify after but definitely didn’t get back to a stable pattern)

5 ball siteswaps:
10 rounds of 744 back to pattern and then 18sh rounds to drop.
10 rounds of 645 back to pattern
663 felt relatively nice today! 10 rounds back to pattern no problem.
753 got 10 rounds back to pattern.
94444 felt awesome! Got a round straight into a 3 up 360 with both hands. Got 4 rounds back to patter.
97531 also felt awesome! 4 rounds back to pattern, I don’t think I’ve ever done this before.
(8x,4)(4,4) got 8 rounds back to pattern, felt nice. 5 ball siteswaps going very well today.

Got 90+ catches of 6 balls async. Got 50+ catches of sync. Landed the transition a few times. The kick up from 5 to 6 was feeling really nice today, got into a stable pattern a bunch of times.
Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit)
7 balls: Over 30 catches in one run to be sure. It is feeling nicer and nicer, even if I haven’t got a massively long run yet, I’m optimistic it will come soon.
Switched up my practice a bit and spent maybe 4 minutes on 5 ball back crosses, figured it would help warm up for my backcross half shower trick.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Landed it a fair few times. It is coming over my shoulder better today. Got 3 alternating backcross non backcross pairs in a row.
6 ball half shower. Got 100 catches clean! I said I thought I would get it soon yesterday! Woop!

Day 4 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
I was either naïve or optimistic that I would be able to practice outside every day. By the time I had got back from Cambridge and got sorted for tutoring, it was time to tutor. By the time I was done tutoring it was distinctly dark.
Had to juggle on my landing, which is fairly decent as landings go - I can just about do 7 but can’t move forward/back or side to side much. Weirdly I can’t do 744, I guess I throw my 7s higher when doing 744 than doing 7
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went well today, got 50 ish catches, not clean, I dropped while trying to collect. Probably went well because my hands were warm and there wasn’t any wind blowing my balance over.

Mills warm up was good, and then 5 ball mills went ok. Maybe got over 20 catches once, not as good as yesterday
Pirouettes had to be scrapped today due to being inside.

5 ball siteswaps:
10 rounds of 744 back to pattern and then 15sh rounds to drop, kneeling down.
10 rounds of 645 back to
663 (not 633 as previous logs have said!) was ok I think, it just never feels particularly nice.
94444,97531 and (8x,4)(4,4) couldn’t be done.
753 got 10 rounds back to pattern.

Got some ok runs of both 6 ball async and 50 of sync in my allocated 2 minutes of each. Did a few kick ups to async and few transitions between sync and async.
Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit)
Did a bit of 7, nothing spectacular, I think while I did technically have enough room it was close enough to make me think I didn’t, which made me tense up.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Landed it a fair few times. It is coming over my shoulder better today.
6 ball half shower. Threw over 80 throws I think. I recon I’ll get 100 clean soon.
Miscellaneous other stuff:
Did a bit of other random stuff to make up the time lost by pirouettes. Did some half contortionist, 5b backcrosses (2 in a row back to pattern- maybe a first?) . Tried to keep up the same 2-3 minutes per trick. Quite enjoyed this part of the session. I did some overheads too. Hopefully back outside tomorrow!

# PracticeLikeAnthony, 60 minutes

Day 3 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
Was in the church in Cambridge. Marginally less cold than being outside and a lot less windy, however my orange balls are not the best colour for juggling in the church- sometimes hard to pick out against the background. I was feeling fairly tired and unmotivated most of the day, and got a bit moody with Heydar during our ring passing practice in the morning- sorry :(
I left a timer running constantly this time rather than setting it for 2 minutes, then resetting to 3 and so on, I think this is a lot better. I paused it when I went to get a drink, which I did a few times. Not sure if I’m getting more disciplined at taking breaks or if I was just looking for excuses to slack off
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points.

Mills warm up was good, and then 5 ball mills went very well. I threw 11 bunches of 3 throws, so I probably caught 30 ish, definitely a very good run, if not my record.
Pirouettes were good, my 3 ups with 5 felt nice out of both hands. Unfortunately this didn’t translate to my 5 ups being good and I only got 1 in the allocated thime.

5 ball siteswaps:
10 rounds of 744 back to pattern and then 20ish rounds to drop.
10 rounds of 645 back to
663 (not 633 as previous logs have said!) was ok I think, it just never feels particularly nice, always a bit of looking up at the 6s then down at the three.
94444 felt good, got 2 rounds starting out of each hand.
97531 same, 2 rounds starting out of each hand.
(8x,4)(4,4) was good, got 4 rounds back to pattern. This is definitely improving, although I had never really worked on it much before this.
753 got 10 rounds back to pattern.

Got some ok runs of both 6 ball async and 50 of sync in my allocated 2 minutes of each. Did a few kick ups to async and few transitions between sync and async.
Got 8 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit)
I got a good run of 7, I think 40 catches?
5 ball half shower with backcross. Landed it a few times not really coming over my shoulder, I’m always reaching back for them
6 ball half shower. Lethargy had me full in its grasp by now, don’t think it went well.

# PracticeLikeAnthony, 60 minutes

Day 2 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
I thought I would put general thoughts at the start this time, so everybody who isn’t interested in the finer details can read them and then stop:
Had to get a train to Cambridge to do some passing so was rushing a bit, still a fairly decent session. I did balance warm up inside which was a lot better. It was quite cold outside today, by the end of the session my hands were definitely more numb than they should have been when trying 6ball half shower. Ideally I would have done it later in the day but needed to set off early.
I’m enjoying practicing like this it’s definitely motivating me to get up earlier/do some juggling. About half the tricks went better than yesterday and half went worse, which I guess is consistent with it just being random fluctuations in a cold and uncaring universe.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points.
5 balls and a balance: Went better, I think I got over 30 catches one run
Mills warm up was good, tried 552 mills with 4 balls. Probably a good warm up for 5.
5 ball mills was ok, maybe got 18 catches in one run, not sure exactly.
Pirouettes were ok, got some 2 stages with 3 and 4 balls. I landed 2 5 ball 5 ups in my allocated 3 minutes! Felt sketchy all the way through though and then got 2 in a run, not sure if this is something to be pleased with?

5 ball siteswaps:
10 rounds of 744 back to pattern and then 20ish rounds to drop.
10 rounds of 645 back to
633 was annoying, but less annoying than yesterday. My second 6 is now higher, just a bit of forwards backwards nonsense going on instead. 9 rounds to drop or something.
94444 felt good, got 2 rounds starting out of each hand.
97531 same, 2 rounds starting out of each hand.
(8x,4)(4,4) was good, got 4 rounds back to pattern.
753 got 10 rounds back to pattern.

Got 95 ish catches of both 6 ball async and 50 of sync in my allocated 2 minutes of each. Did a few kick ups to async and few transitions between sync and async.
Got 8 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit)
Got 30+ catches of 7 balls again I went to collect, dropped this last few, think it was 36 ish. Felt nice on at some point, rubbish at others.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Landed it a few times. Worse than yesterday.
6 ball half shower. Worse than yesterday, still maybe 30 catches, had cold hands by this time.

# PracticeLikeAnthony, 60 minutes

Day 1 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
If you don't care about the specifics and just want general thoughts, they are at the end.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, slightly windy, should probably do this inside on the landing and just make sure I don't drop the balance (Heydar would say you should never drop the balance anyway....)
5 balls and a balance: Not great, maybe 20+ catches on a few runs
Mills warm up was very promising, my 4 ball mills feels really nice in both fountain and 534.
5 ball mills was ok, maybe got 18 catches in one run, not sure exactly.
Pretty pleased with pirouttes in general, got some nice 2 stages with 3 and 4 balls. Would love to link some together at some point. Landed 2 5 ball 5 ups in my allocated 3 minutes! Pretty decent haul, wonder if I'll be able to repeat/improve on this. 3 ups out of 5 with weak hand were poor. Only tried 5 up with strong hand.
5 ball siteswaps: 10 rounds of 744 back to pattern and then 20ish rounds to drop. 10 rounds of 645 back to pattern after I remembered I prefer to throw my 6s on the inside. 633 was annoying, kept on throwing the second 6 lower than it should be. 9 rounds to drop or something. 94444 felt good, got 2 rounds starting out of each hand. 97531 same, 2 rounds starting out of each hand (I think). (8x,4)(4,4) was ok, nearly got 4 rounds back to pattern, would hope to get this soon. 753 got 10 rounds back to pattern.
Got 50+ catches of both 6 ball sync and async in my allocated 2 minutes of each. Possibly 60/70 of async. Pretty decent. Forgot to transition between the two or do kick ups.
Got 7 rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit)
Got 30+ catches of 7 balls! Quite surprised, hadn't worked on it much recently and only got it right as my allocated 3 minutes ran out.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Landed it a few times. Maybe 3 in the same run. Not great.
6 ball half shower. Got maybe 40+ catches in one run.

General thoughts:
It is certainly a different way to practice! I was pretty disciplined at sticking to time. It helped that the phone I was using to time 2 minute sections had a very annoying bleep which made me want to finish my run quickly and reset it. I was less good at taking breaks.
I think it is fairly interesting psychologically to practice like this. I found myself being aware of the time and really wanting to get at least 30 catches of 7 before my 3 minutes ran out. Felt very pleased when I got it on my very last run before the timer went off! This is only half of my 7b record so it's a bit weird to get excited about getting 30 but I guess doing it under time pressure makes it more exciting/fun. Possibly good practice for getting stuff under pressure, like on stage?
I think it's also a good way to avoid getting frustrated. My 663 was pretty poor today, but that didn't annoy me because I only had a minute to try it so not really enough time to get annoyed because I had to move on. Otherwise I might have kept trying until it felt nice, and if I couldn't get it to feel nice I may have got annoyed.
Hard to say whether this will help me progress, I guess today just kind of helped me assess where I am at the moment? I certainly enjoyed it, was pleasantly surprised how some things went. Also 2 minutes it actually more runs of say 97531, for example, than I thought it would be. I tweaked some of the timings as I worked through the list when I felt something was dragging. I filmed a few bits and bobs as Brook said it might be interesting to compare start and end of this experiment. Might give them a watch later.

187' + 75' - 5b rev casc - 83 (12'), 83 cl, .. with more focus on angles, no columns, doing wider, lately, I've been neglecting pattern's top, overthrowing the last ball up, connecting left & right throws somehow. ( In 5b regular cascade in compare, once a ball is past the middle, the tunnel for the next ball is wide open. ) Finding, then focussing on what exactly triggers the next throw, thus the entire rhythm, could be an effective approach for any pattern. .. , 111 (35'), 95, 91, 87, 95 cl, 87 cl, 104, .. one ball down -15 g to 35 g - exchanged it, .. 87, 111 cl, 85, 95, //10'//, 134, 83, 116 throws runs longer than 80 throws. If there is any such weakest elemment in my 5b revs, I'd expect it to be there both, in good and bad phases. Maybe it's simply my weaker hand doing wrong in any case. .. 91, //10' break//, 107, 93, 84, 95, 103, 93, 119, 93, 88 cl, 87 throws runs longer than 80 throws. [ 5b reverse cascade progress: 119 ]
It's going half well, though, - #chartread 5b rev casc - I've increased my average, just haven't gotten the very long runs (~150+ throws) like in spring, nothing way above that daily over 100 throws since over three weeks now.
