Wes Peden at BJC2022!

We are excited to announce that one of the world's most inspirational jugglers will be coming along to the British Juggling Convention next Easter! Join us (and him!) by buying your tickets now from https://bjc2022.co.uk

Wes will be presenting his Ultra-modern pop-punk juggling show ROLLERCOASTER!

Juggling’s own superhero returns with one hour of unadulterated joy. Using the thrill and design of Rollercoasters as a starting point for a performance of the most exhilarating juggling ever made.

Huge blue inflatable structures, electro beats made from distorted rollercoaster sounds, Peden performs original tricks inspired by rollercoasters and their high-tech seatbelts. A spinning plate ceremony becomes a celebration of the great rides of the past; an epic 3 ball disco juggling evokes the evolution of rollercoasters; a 4-meter transparent tube turns into a path around Wes’ body to make balls flow through loops, helixes, and corkscrews. Rollercoaster twists theatrical rules to create a safe space place to perform some of the most difficult and unique juggling ever done on stage!

Rollercoaster is produced by Wes Peden and Gandini Juggling

I’ve just watched this, and thought a couple of people here might enjoy it (and that a couple of other people might grumble that it’s “not juggling” - but we don’t listen to them...)

That's mesmerising.

It's good, but it's no Alban Elved.

Did anyone here follow the discussion regarding if Yoann's work is original or not?

While not all of that could be considered plagiarism (how many jugglers have used Bach's fugues, and tried to implement fugal form, for example, and it's not exactly uncommon to see jugglers performing a box, or finishing with a combined catch / bow) it does seem that M. Bourgeois might have been a bit "literal" with the works influencing his own ...

EJC 2021 Cancelled ?

(message from EJC Organisers on website (and facebook) https://www.ejc2021.org/cancellation-of-ejc-2021/

It’s been a long winter and an even longer pandemic. We have seen a lot of changes and uncertainties in a really short period of time. In 2020, we had to cancel EJC for the first time in history and now, one year later, we are facing the reality that EJC will be cancelled yet again.

Finland is just at the beginning of its biggest wave of infections so far, and vaccination in Finland is not far enough along to save the day – government estimation is that the general public will get their first vaccinations in June. Added to this, with new mutations developing all over the world, we believe that it would not be responsible to host an event encouraging people to travel and mix. We acknowledge that the performing arts are in a dire state, with no immediate relief in sight. The idea of holding an EJC to combat this is tempting, but through the lens of social responsibility, we have decided it is irresponsible to gather so many people from all over the world.

With a sad heart we have to cancel EJC 2021 ?
We don’t want to put all the work to waste, so we will do our best to organise a Gala Show and stream it. Thanks to the fundraising, EJA and Arts Promotion Centre Finland we will be able to organise it without any major risks. So stay tuned!

Let’s hope that in 2022, we will be all together free to juggle at EJC in Tres Cantos!

With Love and health!

The EJC 2021 Crew and Team

**” The EJA (in collaboration with EJC team) is currently working on having an additional online event in place for around the same as the Gala Show. This way everyone can still get some enjoyable EJC vibes into their summer and attend the General Assembly to choose the EJC for 2023. If you want to find out more about these plans (of if you want to help out) then sign up for the EJA newsletter or use the “contact us” page on the EJA website.

The British Juggling Convention is back!

We are raring to go, we have a venue in Ramsgate, and provisional dates for 2022, and the start of a great team. What we need next is a logo - and that’s where you come in!
This year we are running a competition! As a bounty we’re offering free tickets for the designer and a friend (spouse, mum or mortal enemy, it’s their choice) for the whole event.
It’s always been #ByJugglersForJugglers and previous juggler designers include Nick Pearson, Paul Tann, Ian Collar, Emma Marsan-Craske Welford, Avril Smart And Paul Randall (shout out to them, and the ones we’ve not mentioned, for their work!)

The brief is:
Logo should look good against a background of ‘Forest green’ and black.
Logo should reference the British Juggling Convention in some way.

Entries must be provided in a both a standard and vector format by email to thebjc2022@gmail.com with the subject line LOGO. Please include your name, contact number and confirm you are happy with the terms and conditions. If you are under 18 please include your age and confirm that you have obtained parental or guardian consent.

The closing date for submissions is 11.59pm on 31st March 2021. Please ensure you’ve read and are happy with the T’s & C’s below before submitting.

The winning logo will be selected by the main organisers and announced on 7th April 2021.

Peter Richardson 3-Ball stack. Found this clip from last years's BJC on my phone.

Great watch. Also strong 5c bx and nice 7b cascade in the background.

Little Paul - - Parent

Nice, he's getting good at that (and isn't cheating by using those horrible saggy slomo/gertie balls favoured by some 3 ball stack spinners ;)

Although I did get somewhat distracted by Luke Burrage failing to flash 6 clubs in the background. I thought you had that more solid than that Luke? Or were you just having a bad day?

lukeburrage - - Parent

There is another video from this same session where I'm nailing 5 club backcrosses over and over in the background. So it wasn't too bad of a day.

lukeburrage - - Parent

Turns out that's me failing to flash 7 clubs.

The Void - - Parent

One better! :)

Colin E. - - Parent

he can do one more then you.

Little Paul - - Parent

Ahh, well, that would line up better with my mental picture of your skill level :)

mtb - - Parent

Is this one of those tricks that it more difficult than it looks? Because it looked reasonably easy, although not something one can do in the first couple of attempts.

The Void - - Parent

Peter's been ball-spinning for a long time, so he's good at it. When you're good at something, it often "looks easy" to the uninitiated.
It isn't.

mtb - - Parent

Yeah, I thought it was one of those. I have never tried it, so was asking in pure ignorance.

I will say that I was not expecting it to be that much more difficult than I thought it was, based on Nigel's comment below.

Little Paul - - Parent

It jumps up surprisingly fast (unless you're cheating and using the saggy balloon balls that the americans like so much)

If spinning 1 ball = juggling 3 balls, a 2 ball stack is 5 balls, and a 3 ball stack is probably somewhere around 9 balls.

4 balls stacked is just crazy. I've only ever heard of one person getting anywhere with it.

I learned to spin a ball in a little over a week, about 10-15 years ago. Took me about another month to get it comfortably solid a while to get it "solid" - a broadly comparable amount of time to learning a 3 ball cascade.

A few years later I spent a week long festival mostly working on adding a second ball, it stayed on for probably 3 seconds at best. I think in total, that reflects the amount of practice time it took me to go from a solid 3 ball pattern cascade to 10-15 catches of 5 balls.

That was probably nearly a decade ago, and although I admit I don't work on it that often, I've never got more than about 15 seconds of a 2 ball stack (with proper balls) which feels like the equivalent amount of work that it took me to get up to 100 catches of 5 balls.

You can imagine how long I think it would take me to add a 3rd ball!

mtb - - Parent

Sjoe!

It's Him - - Parent

I've been ball spinning for around 15 years. I can stack two balls sometimes but three is definitely beyond me. I've seen Pete stack 4 balls once in 2004 (BJC Derby) at around 01:00. Shame there was no-one around to record that.

Nigel

Nice looking trick, but i'll be honest with you, I expected to see at least 3 balls in this video.

BJC Ticket for sale

Who would like to buy a ticket to this year's wonderful BJC? Circumstances dictate that I have one to sell. Any takers? Know anyone who is after a ticket to BJC but didn't pre-reg in time and can't afford to pay on the door?
Get in touch here or with me directly.
Priority will be given with anyone who accompanies their offer with a good joke.

When you say a "good" joke.....

^Tom_ - - Parent

Well, I /like/ raffles... so I'm obviously not too picky.

Mïark - - Parent

A raffle joke:

Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day.

The next day the farmer drove up and said: "Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The donkey died."

Kenny replied, "Well then, just give me my money back."

The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already."

Kenny said, "OK, then just unload the donkey."

The farmer asked, "What you going to do with it?"

Kenny: "I'm going to raffle him off."

Farmer: "You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"

Kenny: "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody it is dead."

A month later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "What happened with that dead donkey?"

Kenny: "I raffled it off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 a piece and made a profit of $998.00."

Farmer: "Didn't anyone complain?"

Kenny: "Just the guy who won. So I gave him his $2 back."

The Void - - Parent

I'll have it. I'll see if I have your email address handy. If not, one of mine's on tlmb.net/void

(Ask me why I've got a fried egg on my head)
