America's got jugglers...

Viktor Kee is in this seasons Americas Got Talent. Even Simon seemed to like it.

Alexander Koblikov also got a decent slot on The Late Show

Is american TV finally waking up to the existence of non-coment, non-danger jugglers?

I also thought it was supposed to be cement & thought it was a clever way of saying 'anyone who is not Anthony Gatto'.

Little Paul - - Parent

I'm flattered you think I'm that clever...

I was a camera operator in a TV studio that was transitioning to HD cameras (around 2007). The older cameras captured the image with a video camera tube. If the camera was pointed directly at bright studio lights, a hole or streak would be burned into the tube. There would be a black spot on the image from then on.

The camera work in both of these clips is amazing. It would not have been possible with older style studio cameras.

Most Americans now have large high-resolution displays and connections to high-resolution video streams on broadcast TV, network TV, or from the internet. Ten years ago, producers weren't considering booking jugglers because they didn't have the technology to capture the performance and show it in a way that would be watchable to viewers.

While I know what you mean about tube cameras (just watch any tv drama with a flashlight in it)

I find it hard to believe that it was the camera technology preventing people booking jugglers. I mean, Paul Daniels booked jugglers regularly on UK to, in prime time Saturday night slots all through the 1980s.

I think it's more likely that those acts weren't being booked because juggling just isn't cool :)

I have watched some clips from the Paul Daniels show, and I have found that it proves my point. I haven't seen any light bulbs or low angle shots. If Koblikov performed on the Paul Daniels show, the following shots would not have been possible with the older production gear:

Do you have any clips of jugglers performing 7 balls on the Paul Daniels show?

Daniel Simu - - Parent

Yes, these particular shots might have been impossible... but do you really believe that would stop tv producers from including jugglers? Doesn't this problem rise with any performance art? Isn't the issue even much worse outside of the tv studio, even though there are many many older videos recorded in circus tents such as at Monte Carlo?

Anyway, here is 7 ball juggling at Paul Daniels, though I'd admit it looks boring.

Here is Bob Bramson at Paul Daniels, he skips the 7 hoops but I assume that had to do with his age, not with the studio. His 5 hoops are as high as any 7b though, and the camera seems to move very freely

And besides Paul Daniels there are plenty of clips of jugglers too, here is Anthony performing 7 clubs in a studio

Not the same shots as Koblikov, but doesn't make the juggling look any worse...

Gregory Popovich does 7 balls on the tonight show, 2:28

And some more clips of "numbers jugglers" in tv studios I stumbled upon while looking up the above:

Thank you Jtv for your categories! http://juggling.tv/channels/10/mv/actual-tv

Thank you for this list of clips. I do find the Koblikov shot to be much more watchable than all of the other clips you posted.

Recording and distribution is a problem (and opportunity) for any performance art. Jugglers have seized this opportunity by posting videos for technical review, and by making juggling tutorials.

Filming in a tent would be easier. In a studio, the lights are set up to film a desk and a chair. In a tent, the setup can be dedicated to capturing juggling.

Fascinating stuff!

I remember seeing a documentary about "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", where they said one of their differentiators was how radical the lighting design was, since it was one of the first shows to use lighting effects that pointed directly into the camera.

It hadn't occurred to me that the camera technology was what stopped that before!
