TheTubJuggler -

Hello! I am new to the juggling edge and just wanted to say greetings to my fellow jugglers. I am here because I signed up for the 2014 KC juggling festival and am eager to attend my first juggling festival. I am approaching two years of pretty serious juggling and have a good feeling that going to an event such as this will help me tremendously. I have yet to learn any 4 or 5 ball tricks (though I have tried!) and being around others taking this skill seriously is exactly what I need. I look forward to meeting a lot of awesome jugglers and learning more than I ever have in just a few days time. Juggle on friends!

Welcome to the edge!

Juggling festivals have a magical ability. I am always a better juggler during the week after a fest, even if I didn't really juggle during the fest. You kind of soak up the inspiration, the technique, ideas and general love for the hobby which is floating around...and then you level up after the fest. I think I may be tired, that was way too joyful and deep for me.

Have a blast, make friends, and don't be shy to ask questions. Both here, and especially at the festival!

Interesting you see that effect the week after, as I usually see it *during* the fest (this is especially true of longer events)

Several times I've had tricks work while I'm at a fest and all enthused, which then go back to failing miserably when I get home. I suspect that's related to the amount of practice I do at/not-at fests though :)

But yes, have a blast, make friends, if someone is doing something you think is cool - go tell them! I'd usually wait for them to drop/stop first though, some people don't like being interrupted mid-juggle, but are otherwise happy to share!

I think I experience the effect more during fest too. Possibly because I'm usually so burnt out by the end it takes me a while to recover.

Hello & welcome!

Yep, my first festival was a fantastic inspirational experience.

Make sure you put as much effort as you can into meeting people, don't go with the intention to get as much practice as you can done otherwise you'll end up doing too much solitary practice which you could do at home. The best thing about any juggling festival is all the other jugglers so make the most of them! Walk all around the hall & see what other people are doing (if there are multiple juggling spaces make sure you explore all of them). As LP said, if you like what someone is doing strike up a conversation. If they are deep into a serious practice session wait until they drop or otherwise stop & ask if they could spare some time to teach you something at a later time. KC Festival is on for 3 days, plenty of time for to arrange 'juggling dates' in. You'll be amazed at how open & accommodating jugglers are[1].

[1] Actually there was one time that I wasn't. It was either Durham or York BJC when one of the TWJC teenagers came up to me & asked me to teach them a trick. I looked at them, looked around the hall, looked back. Then I told them that they see me every week, that they were in a hall full of people a lot better than me who they wouldn't see again until the next festival & that they should talk to someone we don't know.

I think we take the, "Don't talk to strangers" mantra too far.
