Fred Astaire was a fine manipulator - he uses a large variety of objects in his many films. This is one of my favourites simply because it's jam-packed with manipulation.
Mr Astaire was 57 when this was filmed !
(Mr Lackpot - you posted a video here of a "super dance routine with canes". Unfortunately the link no longer works. I'd be interested to see it if you can remember what it was?)

Fred Astaire can do one. That's not an insult, he just seemed to be able to turn his hand to anything. I think sometimes people see Astaire as merely a great hoofer, but as far as I can tell he was a truly talented polymath of the performing arts. What a shame his swansong was Towering Sodding Inferno.
With respect to Astaire's age, let us not forget that Johnny Hutch was 64 when he won an acrobatic competition. Age may be a formidable sheet anchor in competitive athletics; but not so much when performing on stage.
I made a copy of that hatstand for my mate Dodger years ago (the one who compèred the last Lestival!) but I don't know whether he ever polished the routine well enough to use it.
Unfortunately I have no memory whatsoever of the "Super Dance Routine With Canes" :( Perhaps Luke Burrage may be able to offer a clue?
