Completely off-topic: RSS Christmas Quiz

The Guardian now hosts a version of the Royal Statistical Society's Christmas quiz here: https://www.theguardian.com/education/datablog/2015/dec/07/tackle-the-royal-statistical-society-christmas-quiz

Helpful hints as to the mindset of the setters can be obtained by looking at the solutions to last year: https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2015/jan/16/royal-statistical-societys-christmas-quiz-2014-the-answers

They've made this a little "easier" over the years - it used to be that there were no completely correct solutions, now they get a few!

Since when have we had a topic?

Without looking at last year's answers or searching the internet I can answer all of one question. 13 = 8.

Do I win anything?

13 = 8

Looking at question 13, that seems unlikely! Do you mean 15 = 8?

I've got answers for most of questions 1, 2 and 3 but that's as far as I've got. Anyone fancy teaming up to try to finish it?

Orinoco - - Parent

I do indeed. Apparently there is more than one way in which I'm rubbish at these quizzes!

A group effort sounds good: however the prize for non-RSS members submitting via the Guardian is a little hard to share out as they are "Significance" magazines [a joint publication by the Royal Statistical Society and the American Statistical Association aimed at general interest statistics - for example I have a piece in the next edition on the general trends pre and post plastic bag levies in the constituent parts of the UK].

The RSS submission has a prize of amazon vouchers (to the value of £100 and £50) and has a few extra clues:

The prize is the least interesting thing about this!

I know. The bragging rights are quite special. It's really nice to have a quiz that doesn't have easily "googleable" answers.

Last night drunk me was impressed but clueless. this morning sober, cynical me got to grips with a few of them. It's hard, but not as hard as the King Williams quiz which should be out any day now.

Thanks for posting, that's a meaty quiz.

I'm now working on the GCHQ Christmas puzzle [there are multiple stages]. I'd welcome the King Williams quiz to bring back to Ireland for the holidays.

I've been working through a bit of this in another place.

In no particular order: 1 is Chinese years; 9 is colours of the rainbow with respect to the poems of Tennyson; 12 is tennisists; 5a is cheeses; 3c is Sylvesters; 2a is probably New Horizons; 3a is 'great'; 15 is indeed 8, or 9 if you're being really picky; 4a is Marilyn Monroe references; and 14 is possibly birthplaces and kingdoms of a variety of monarchs.

Enough to get you started?

Wow! Spoilers ahoy!
2a isn't anything to do with horizons of any age.
14 is monarchs but you need to work a bit harder on the details ;-)
I've made progress on some others as well but shall we not ruin it if anyone wants to play alone?
Cheers

I have 2a!

Spoiler tags are for pussies ... but okay.

I think that if anyone wants to work on their own, they should click the option to "ignore this thread" at the top.

Been keeping an occasional eye here but this thread has convinced me that there should be a jugglers team in the next series of Only Connect. Who's up for it?
