Bit of a radical departure, but we're having an official Fight Night this year. Wednesday. With a potential extra 12 points, which Ewano has the details on.

Well it's all official and everything..
While at the BJC Luke agreed to an extra 12 points for the event, but you know how he backtracks later on when he realises he's agreed to something I suggested. Turns out that this extra 12 points would mean he needs to rewrite the Fight Night website - or some such excuse. I'm sure though that he'll be along some time soon to explain how he plans to honour the terms he agreed with us..
On a side note, we should probably have a look at some more of the rules to see how we can subvert his system some more move to a 350/500 tournament in the future..

I just looked at the code and data and stuff and it seems like giving the winner 12 extra points is quite easy. What will take more work is for the tournament to be listed as a "262 level tournament" in other places on the website, either in advance or afterwards. And I'm not going to do that extra work.

Fight night? I'm appalled. This goes against the whole love and peace, non-competitive hippy ethos with which BBU was originally conceived.
In other news, Mike and I have plans and materials to make the biggest trebuchet ever seen at a juggling convention. Hopefully this one will be able to completely destroy Ewans tent from my position at the far corner of the buttercup meadow. Hope your ballista plans are well advanced Geordy boy.
Also farmer Paul has been sorting through Sue's extensive book collection and I now have a stack of quiz books as tall as LP.
I was thinking of mastermind this year but no reason we can't have a different one each day. Anyone who suggests deal or no deal will quickly become my new trebuchet target though.

Do not search teh Googles newsgroups for 'buttered Burrage'.
The sheep vacated the field two weeks ago and the grass is growing like mad.
The buttercup forecast is very good as we have not had the shortage of rain that we have had in the last few years and the current heatwave could make it a vintage year. Daisies and dandelions are in abundance too.
Morning chorus has been extremely loud and starts around 5am at the moment.
Night time owl noise is high as the Tawny's argue over territory.
Barn owls have been hunting during the day to feed their new offspring. I damn near killed one last week as it flew right in front of me on the road up to the farm. I had to emergency brake and missed it by under a foot (30cm).
Poker forecast is very high. Hairy is definitely coming and hasn't played for over a year so is itching for a game. Both Dan the hats are coming too. Not sure what happens when they are both in the same room. Do they cancel each other out? Is it like hatter and anti-hatter?
We had 3 of them at Bristol one year! I think Original has been Dan The Hatless for some years now, so we're probably all safe.

There *is* a proper nomenclature you know. Dan The Original Hat (because he always wore a hat, nothing to do with juggling IIRC). T'other is Dan the Exeter Hat (because that's where he hails from). Any other Dan the Hats will have to wait their turn.

I am coming to the UK to get a new passport, but I have a problem. I need a countersigning person who lives in the UK, is in the UK, has a passport, has known me for 2 years, is not related to me and either "work in (or be retired from) a recognised profession" or is "a person of good standing in their community".
But as I've lived in Germany for 10 years, most people I know in the UK are jugglers and other performer types. Turns out "Professional Juggler" isn't on the list of "Accepted occupations for countersignatories": https://www.gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications/accepted-occupations-for-countersignatories
I'm looking elsewhere, but is anyone going to be at Bungay on the first Monday who could help me out? All you need to do is sign the back of a photo and a form. And you have to know your passport number. Let me know if you can be my standby! Thanks!
When I registered as an overseas voter, I had to find a witness to sign my form. That person had to be another British citizen, but one who was not resident in the UK. But not someone of particular standing. So you'd have done, but the masses of impressive sounding people who could have done it for me at the Lestival I happened to go to around that time were the useless type of British citizen who actually lived in Britain!
That sounds bizarre. I think I needed my NI number, and they wanted the address at which I was last on the electoral role. I didn't think that I had to do much more than that.

Looking at that list of occupations, I think there are candidates for:
- accountant (I know fak used to do that sort of thing, but I don't know how qualified she was or needs to be)
- chairman/director of limited company - I think Charlie can tick that box
- director/manager/personnel officer of a VAT-registered company - Charlie can definitely tick that box
- engineer - with professional qualifications - I'd be surprised if we can't scrounge up one of those
- manager/personnel officer of a limited company - Charlie again?
- teacher, lecturer - Will Dee be around on the Monday? Most of the teachers who turn up tend to be second-weekenders so wouldn't be any use to youYour countersignatory can’t:
- work for HM Passport Office
- be a doctor, unless they state that they know you well (eg good friend) and that they recognise you easily from your photo
The medical professionals who tend to turn up (Dr Alice, Helen S etc) could certainly state they know you well.

I am on the list of approved professions, but can't make Bungay this year; although for the first time in ages it's not because I have student vivas during the middle of it. This time, it's because I'm under a super-tight deadline to get all of the marks back in (I'm module leader for the project, so have to do all the admin) before I fly to the US for a family wedding [flying out during Bungay week].
I enjoyed my trip into BBC Bristol to do the recording - the calculations involved weren't difficult, but asking the right question and inserting the appropriate terms and conditions on the calculations was difficult. One of my aunts didn't recognise my voice [I consider that to be what I'm going to call my "Radio 4" voice, a lot slower than my usual way of speaking]. I was recruited to do that as part of my involvement in the Royal Statistical Society [and you were right with the show - my piece was on the chance of receiving the equivalent of a jury summons in Scotland]

I've been meaning to go back and listen to this again as, on first listen, I got the impression that they used your name surprisingly often for a short article.
Maybe it's just because your full name (with the honorific) sounds incongruous to me. Or maybe they're proud of pronouncing it correctly and wanted to make the most of it! If only we knew someone with the skills to develop some kind of index of radio article naming frequency ;o)

Significance magazine is a good shout for those interested in applications of statistics [for those of you who are maths teachers in the UK or Ireland, you can get a free e-Teacher membership of the Royal Statistical Society, which happens to included free subscription to Significance magazine though an app - this gives more articles than only those that appear on the statslife.org.uk website]
There is currently a series called "ask a statistician" series in Significance, so if anyone has any curious question that may spark something similar to my calculations needed for the question about jury duty. I went through the same process in 2007 and went to the Bristol convention while waiting the week for my passport to be delivered. Richard Loxley was a director of a limited company at the time and did it for me then. :)
I'm an engineer as well but never joined the IEEE or anything so don't have 'professional qualifications' whatever that means. Happy to sign Luke!

I'm definitely bringing my rola bola.
After a brief play on one at the BJC I was inspired to dig mine out of the loft to take to Appleby on Saturday. And I went from never-tried-the-pipe-parallel-to-the-board to over-a-minute-of-double-rollers in an afternoon. I haven't been this excited about a learning curve for years!
I only fell in an undignified heap once, and I didn't hurt myself too badly :o)

I made it for planning some new routes for me to run as I find that sort of thing easier to do on paper than I do on a screen, especially given how sketchy some of the online map data is for the area.
This desire for mapping the area was prompted by me mapping the run I've been doing the last couple of years which I thought was "just shy of 10Km" and found it's more like "just shy of 9Km" and needing to find an extra Km of footpaths :)
