You'll be seeing this diabolo video from Guillaume Karpowicz if you haven't already:

I love the atmosphere of serene, haunting music which matches the smoothness of the patterns.

As for the skills: not bad.

Is 9 catches with 6 diabolos a new world record?

Would is be possible to use some type of catapult device to launch the diabolos?

The Void - - Parent

Yes, it's been done in an act. A German diabolist (I forgot his name, sorry) in the EJC '94 gala show had one.

Jochen Schell? He used to start 3-in-the-air by throwing 2 and popping the third onto his string with a little catapult.

I remember at that time he was generally regarded as something of a demi-god, because he could do tricks with 2 diabolos, as well as 3-in-the-air. That was cutting edge - even the Chinese diabolists didn't really do tricks with 2 (although they didn't have modern diabolos).

It is astonishing how far diabolo has progressed. This video completely blew my mind.

I remember when I thought I was great because I had an entire routine with two diabolos. I did over the arm, around the leg, a suicide, and a few other tricks. Now that routine is like a four ball fountain is to toss juggling. Sucks to get old and get passed right on by. But hey, I can still qualify 6 clubs and kick up to a thee ball spin stack. Not too bad for an old fat guy.

No.
Long hair, heavy metal.

Fritz Grobe perhaps?

The Void - - Parent

Nope.

Here's Jochen Schell at Maastricht EJC 1989 - unfortunately you can't see the actual device, just the result:

Note the rapturous reception!

From the way they bounce, I'm assuming renegade diabolos?

In which case the catapult device could be fairly simple as it wouldn't have to impart much (any?) spin.

I'm guessing a short length of string attached to the end of the board and wrapped once or twice around the diabolo would probably do the trick.

At 1:20 in this video, they use folding chairs as catapults haha! https://youtu.be/zgrgouL2Or8

For diabolo records on Juggle Wiki, catches are only counted if the diabolo was both thrown and caught with the string, so Guillaume's run in this video would be 4 catches.

The current record is 7 catches by Tony Frebourg in 2015 (video) using an assisted start, which helps since all the high throws are done with the string.

Definitely not what you had in mind, but seems relevant - https://youtu.be/Mzr6d6F_kIo

It's too bad they didn't have a bench grinder and some bearings.
