Scottish 2019 - belated review
After a few years resting, SJC came back to life in Dundee in 2019 - huge thanks to Avril and Duncan. A three-day weekend convention, with one show.
Show:
Compere: Rugg Tomcat
Void (Hats)
Suzanne (Diabolo)
Richii (Staff contact + juggling)
Charlie Piper (Clown - chair and clubs)
Antonia and Keith (Throw Poi)
Sylvain (Clubs)
David Stone (Balls)
Robert Gallagher-Lyall (Balls)
Void (Clubs)
I remember enjoying the show, and a few details from acts (a thrown-on club for Charlie's act managed to land perfectly balanced across the footrails of the chair, forcing a short pause for corpsing). However I thought I'd taken a few contemporary notes which have now vanished...
Venue: a warren-like brick building, definitely showing age and wear here and there. Lots of spaces to sit and chat / eat / play games, but only one juggling hall, on the first floor, which was also the show venue. Camping was on the building's lawns, out of sight from the road but not fenced off (I don't recall anything going missing from anybody's tent though). Weather in September was sunny enough that there was plenty of juggling and hooping going on outside.
No showers on site, boo, but some people trekked to a swimming pool for showers, and presumably swimming as well. No food on site either, but a supermarket in walking distance, and a corner shop sitting cater-corner across the junction for Irn Bru and newspapers.
Also, there was Clarks 24-hour bakery not too far away. More conventions should have one of these, please!
Finally, we attended by train and the approach to the city over the Tay is simply magnificent. Helen and I had a lovely time that weekend, it's such a shame that the attempt to re-start a regular Sottish convention ran into Covid, and I do hope the September 2022 edition is really well attended - sadly I don't think we'll be able to!
