The Void -

It was pretty busy at #DabHands tonight. Ian was trying out his own hand-braided whip. The acro crew were balancing each other in one corner, Johnny, Sam and Rachel had a dabble at kendama, Sam seeming quite intigued, and Johnny seemed hooked. Ian and Mark were passing 6 clubs on 1-count versus 4-count(or was it 3?). Chris was teaching Sam some club passing too. The waveboard was getting a bit of use too. Meanwhile I was working on some onion-and-2-ladles moves. (I've got a "walkabout chef" gig on Saturday.)

Who was the guy at Bristol a couple of years ago who was messing around with ladles? I seem to remember he had some interesting moves involving hanging one off the other.

Or was that spaghetti servers? I've got vague recolections of a trick involving poking something through the hole in the end of the implement, normally used to hang it up.

My aged memory fails me. I think I've seen someone doing something pretty nice along those lines at an EJC. My ladles don't have a little curved hook at the end of the handle, which I seem to recall has been used to good effect.

I may have to, ahem, "be inspired by" this though...

hard to juggle with those curved ends though as many bored hours in kitchens has proved to me.Enjoy your "chef" gig, it's all in the mis en place.

fak reckons it might have been Idam. Or Tom Derrick at Bungay, playing with those dog-ball thrower thingies.

It wasn't Tom, and it was deffo at Bristol (slope field, red/yellow tent, which narrows it down to about a 10 year period I think) so it must have been Idam then.

I remember him, though not who he was (not anyone suggested so far). It was spaghetti server things.

Stephen Bridge did some tricks with ladles & balls on the Renegade stage at Crawley a few years back.

It was a really fun night and good to meet you! Rachel asked me to pass on that she also was interested in kendama, please don't think she wasn't - sadly due to one of her medical conditions (there are many) her knees just couldn't take it for too long. I never realised it was all in the knees! I'm going to have to check out a few youtube vids and pay particular attention to the stance...

Club passing with Chris was great fun even if I was all over the place. I've brought my clubs to work so hopefully, of a lunchtime, I can get a bit of practice in on my 3 club cascade and slow it down / clean it up a bit.

Nice to meet you too. Check out https://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,905.0.html , Sam.... and Rachel. :-)

bookmarked! we took a look at the main website and store too, I think we'd definitely like to buy a kendama with a green tama next time we see you if that's cool. We'll be at dab hands next week for sure and most likely every week for the foreseeable future :)

Wilco! See you then, cheers.

Although doing kendama properly involves knees, as someone who also now can't do anything involving knees, you can have lots of fun doing kendama without knee movement. You might not be as good or learn as fast as someone with the proper stance, but it's just another challenge.
